US Student Visa Requirements (F1 Visa):

  • Valid Passport: Your passport should have a validity date of at least six months beyond your period of stay in the US.
  • Recent Passport-sized Photograph: Submit a recent photograph that meets the US visa photograph requirements.
  • Confirmation Page of DS-160: Complete the Online Non-immigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160) and provide the confirmation page.
  • Form I-20: Obtain the Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) from your US school.
  • SEVIS Fee Payment: Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online once you receive your Form I-20.

Steps to Apply for a US Study Visa:

  1. Apply to a US School and Get Accepted: Begin by applying to a US university or college and receiving an acceptance letter.
  2. Obtain Form I-20 or DS-2019: After acceptance, you will receive Form I-20 (F-1 and M-1 students) or Form DS-2019 (J-1 students) from your school.
  3. Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee: Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online using the provided form from your school.
  4. Locate a US Embassy or Consulate: Find the nearest US embassy or consulate where you will apply for your student visa.
  5. Fill out the DS-160 Form: Complete the Online Non-immigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160) and select the US embassy for your visa interview.
  6. Schedule a Visa Interview: Contact the US embassy or consulate to schedule your visa interview.
  7. Pay the Visa Application Fee: Pay the required visa application fee, which is the same regardless of where you apply or where you are from.
  8. Attend the Visa Interview: Attend your scheduled visa interview, which will determine whether you are granted a student visa.
  9. Pay the Visa Issuance Fee: After approval, certain students may be required to pay a visa issuance fee based on nationality and reciprocity agreements.
  10. Receive Your Visa: Once all requirements are fulfilled and your visa is approved, your passport will be returned to you with the US study visa.

After You Graduate:

Upon completing your studies, F1 student visa holders are eligible for up to 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) to gain practical experience in their field. If you wish to continue working in the US beyond the OPT period, you will need to apply for a work visa.

Student Dependent Visa (F2 Visa):

For the immediate family members of F1 student visa holders, the F2 visa allows dependents to accompany the student in the US. Here are the eligibility conditions and requirements for the F2 visa:
